But Jesus is the full revelation of God's plan and will.
The opening words of Hebrews explain, The prophets foretold God's judgment for rebellious nations.
But Jesus revealed the full and final judgment for all the wicked.
Second, while the prophets were God's messengers, Jesus is the Son of God.
The Word of God made flesh.
He is divine.
He is not just the messenger.
He is the judge.
Jesus will judge every person and deem them washed by his blood and saved, or unbelieving, unrepentant, and condemned.
As the judge, Jesus is the most qualified person to explain the truth about hell.
Knowing what lay in store for the wicked, Jesus did not hold back when describing eternity.
He made it abundantly clear that death is not the end for the unforgiven sinner.
What awaits is a lake of fire, a place of darkness, a place of torment, and complete separation from God.
And Jesus' words are not mere metaphors.
They are not hyperbole.
Jesus described hell as a real place, just as real as heaven.
For example, in Matthew 25, verses 31 through 46, Jesus paints a picture of the day of judgment.
He describes those who will be granted eternal life and those who will be told to depart into the eternal fire.
He ends with the promise that the wicked will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.
If eternal life is real, eternal punishment is real also.
