So probably 40s, I'd say.
He's really resistant because the voice in his head tells him not to, to start with.
So the voice in his head does not want him to go on this particular trial, which is really just taking a very sort of mild drug, which will cure athlete's foot.
Like there's some sense that it will deal with schizophrenia as well.
And I think that the voice, in a way, it's hard to know.
You never quite know whether the voice is a real external thing or his own internal understanding of the world, which is quite heightened.
But I think he really knows that this thing will work and it will take away the voice.
And he's lived with this voice for 20 years.
And he's quite frightened of the idea that he might be alone in the world without the voice in his head.
It's the voice of Malamok.
And Malamok is the octopus god who's the original transmigrant being.
So he's got this whole mythology about this octopus god that the octopus is the god, is the original creature, like an alien that kind of founded the earth.
And this particular voice, this octopus god, wants him to live in a particular way.
It won't let him drink.
It won't let him eat animal products, so no cheese, which he loves.
It won't let him think about sex or masturbate.
It really wants him to be a kinder person and a nicer person.
So he does all these, you know, incredible good deeds out of the blue, like trying to give his coat to another homeless person or, you know, helping someone across the road.
And it's the voice in his head.
Oh, I'm not 100% sure, to be honest.
