If you were to take the subway on a regular basis, which everyone did, it was graffiti smeared.

It was the streets were trash filled and homelessness was on the rise.

And it felt very much like a city in crisis.

And on this one day, three days before Christmas, kind of a loner white guy named Bernie Getz gets on the train.

And on that train are already four young teenagers from the South Bronx, another place that had really been decimated by the economics of this period.

And

And they end up in a very, very brief conversation, a hello.

One of the kids asks him if he has $5, which, of course, in this time period of panhandling and everyone's asking everyone for some money, it's not particularly unusual.

But what is unusual is this guy says,

stands up as if he's going to get some money, and turns around immediately, assumes a combat stance, and guns down these teenagers.

One, he shoots straight in the chest.

The other in the back as he's running away.

The third also trying to run away in the arm.

And the fourth, who he misses, what was most staggering about this event is he gets up, walks over to him, stands over him and says, you look all right, here's another, and shoots him at point blank range, severing his spinal column.

So it was this incredible, especially as you might imagine for the passengers on that train, really a horrific event that happens.

The story I tell, though, is really about the thereafter, the fallout from this, which is as stunning in many ways as the event itself.

Well, that's actually, that's so true.

And what was really remarkable is that after he shoots these images,

Because he then disappears into the subway tunnels.

He is on the run.
