Now,
It was a subconscious driver that I became aware of after I achieved my goals, after I achieved my sixth consecutive world title.
Because when dad said, you're my baby girl, but you don't belong here.
Well, he never said, you don't belong here.
He actually said, but you're adopted.
And I instantly thought, well, I don't belong here.
I thought, I know if I become a world champion, everyone will love me.
That's the only moment where I'm going to be deserving of love if I become the best in the world at something.
Now, at the time, I wanted to be best in the world at every sport I played.
Yeah.
Tennis, cricket, soccer, hockey.
But surfing was my number one passion.
It was the one thing that I couldn't stop thinking about.
It's the one thing I day dreamed about.
It's the one sport I wanted to keep coming back to and playing every day.
And I decided that I was going to become a world champion athlete when I was 14 in surfing after I competed in my first event.
Now, the first event was a charity event that I competed in and I came dead last in my first heat.
It didn't discourage me.
It inspired me.
It made me realise that, yes, I love this.
