Donald Trump lands in China for high-stakes talks

I'm calling it the four T's. Let's start with the big one, Tehran. So obviously the war in Iran is now overshadowing these talks. And when it comes to the United States, they may be hoping that China can perhaps nudge its friend and ally Tehran towards the negotiating table. Now remember, China is Iran's biggest buyer of oil, biggest trade partner and a longtime friend and ally.

So it may well be, using that economic and political leverage, the US will hope that China can give them a hand here. However, it will be interesting to see how willing Beijing is to do that. They have been working behind the scenes. They have also been working with Pakistan on that peace proposal. However, China does not want to kind of wade too far into the Middle East conflict. Then we have trade and technology. When it comes to trade, the US really wants China to buy more American goods.

And we think that will happen. More American soybeans, more American beef and more American planes. Donald Trump is hoping that China will open its market to the United States. And there's the final T, and that is Taiwan. And this is the difficult issue, because for China this is the main issue. They will want to pressure the United States to stop selling arms to Taiwan, the self-governing island that Beijing claims as its own. Laura Bikker.

Saudis to pull out of LIV Golf

If you go to a Chinese tourist site, maybe the Avatar Mountains in Zhangjiajie, or you go to Huashan Mountain near Xi'an, you will hear that familiar buzzing noise above your head as tourists try to get the kind of social media presence.

...picture and portrait on a drone. And I think, you know, when it comes to the reasons behind this, it has been the fact that drones are becoming more and more popular in Chinese society. But also the Chinese government will be eager to track them, to trace them, to know who's flying them, where and when. And just why are they clamping down exactly?

No one's given any specific reason. So the Ministry of Public Security has said this is for security and safety reasons. But there's no doubt this is going to hit China's biggest drone supplier, drone maker DJI, hugely. Here in Beijing, for instance, there's a total ban on all flights. Now it's already difficult to fly a drone or any kind of aircraft in Beijing.

but now there's a total ban on even bringing in drones or components for drones from outside the city. And there is footage from many of the DJI shops, this famous drone maker, across Beijing, and there is not a single drone in their shop outside of Beijing.

The restrictions are a little bit easier, but still you have to go to the police station. You have to register with your ID. You have to take a special course to say that you'll be a responsible citizen. You have to download software in order that the authorities can track every single flight in real time. So it makes it even more difficult for anyone to fly a drone. I think the other thing is you can apply for permission, but we're hearing online that

I think you can apply for one, but I think the chances of you getting one, it might be still difficult. No one really knows exactly how this will play out. If you're looking at a major tourist site, will you be able to fly there? And I think that's very, very uncertain right now. I think in terms of where we are with Chinese restrictions, once they put it in place, it's very difficult to even go near the grey area. There will be people patrolling, and we've already heard from people who are switching on their drones and already getting visits from the police.

to check that they're complying with the regulations. There are exceptions if the size of the drone, for instance, and of course if there are areas on the map that are green or white, then you are able to fly them to a certain height. But outside of that, and particularly here in the capital, it will be very, very difficult.

China calls US blockade of Iranian ports 'dangerous'

But these words come against a backdrop of yet another foreign leader, this time the prime minister of Spain visiting Beijing. In the last few months alone we've had the leaders of Britain, of Germany, of Finland, of Canada, all here trying to do a deal with China. And when it comes to Spain, the most vocal critic in Europe against US and Israeli actions is

in Iran has been Pedro Sanchez, and he did so again. Today, when he met with President Xi, he pushed China to take a bigger role on the world stage and to push for international order. For his part, President Xi said that chaos abounds and that the international order was crumbling. All of this comes as President Xi is positioning himself against the U.S.,

too far into any kind of conflict. It does have this policy of non-interference, so its leverage over Iran is limited. Tehran in the last week has called for both China and Russia to provide security guarantees in the event of any peace deal. That might be very difficult for

for Beijing to offer, but it will be cautiously right now trying to examine what position it takes in the weeks going forward. It does want an end to this war because of the global insecurity in terms of the economy, and it will not want this war to continue. However, it also has to balance that against its policy of non-interference and its wariness against getting involved in any foreign war.

Why is China seeking closer UK ties?

So in terms of what's been agreed so far, how big are those deals in the grand scheme of things? I asked our China correspondent Laura Bicker, who's in Beijing. There was an expectation that there would be something bigger. Now the visit isn't over yet, there's still more to come. And it is a significant investment by AstraZeneca. And of course this visa-free travel is something that other European countries have had. More than 70 countries in fact around the world have had.

Britain was an outlier, mainly because China offers these visas after a world leader arrives on their doorstep. It's almost like, look, come here and then we'll give you the visas. I think it's kind of on the periphery. I think there are bigger issues at play, but it does seem that at least negotiations are starting. If you speak to those who do business here in China, they believe that this smooths the wheels, so to speak.

Why is China seeking closer UK ties?

Does China really listen to what the UK is saying? I think they'll sit there. I think they will make noises. But I think when it comes to issues on human rights, when it comes to security concerns, China really pushes back. It turns around and says to their counterparts, stop interfering in internal affairs. And I think they expect it to come up. They know that when Western governments face their counterparts here in Beijing...

That that's something they've been told to raise, they know that it's coming and they have their responses prepared. Is it going to change things? Very much doubt it. And I think actually one of the things that I've heard many Chinese commentators push back on, I heard from a few yesterday saying on various foreign media, hang on, you're accusing China of human rights abuses, but look at the United States. Now one has got absolutely nothing to do with the other.
