And it's important for me to see those two projects, liberalism and socialism, as continuous with each other.
And to also think in what way does our economic system actually undermine this concern for freedom that is at the heart of the liberal tradition.
One way of reading the socialist critique of capitalism is as an economic system there restricts freedom for a number of people and that in fact entrenches certain hierarchies of economic and political power that make it really difficult for some people to have freedom and that give too much freedom to other people.
And so it's an ideological operation and a sort of ideological misleading that attributes the success of social democracy to liberalism and to capitalism.
Because I think historically social democracy emerges from the socialist critique of capitalism, and it's an effort to place limits on capitalism.
And to the extent that it's a success story, it's a success story because it has contained capitalism, not because it has enabled it to flourish.
And I think likewise this assimilation of
of equality to collectivism and this distinction of the free world the capitalist world is the world that cares about freedom and the Soviet socialist state socialist world is the world that cares about equality is also one way of obscuring how actually
Freedom is also at the heart of the socialist tradition.
