New research shows overdose deaths in the U.S.
fell through most of last year, and the data suggests the number of overdose deaths has been falling for more than two years, the longest drop in decades, but also that the decline is slowing.
The CDC data found an estimated 73,000 people died from overdoses in the 12-month period that ended August of 2025.
down about 21 percent from the 92,000 in the previous 12-month period, with deaths down in all states except Arizona, Hawaii, New Mexico, Kansas, and North Carolina.

The Justice Department says there's no current plan to launch a civil rights probe into the deadly shooting in Minnesota.
The Justice Department has asked the Federal Appeals Court to dismiss its appeal of a lower court order blocking the Trump administration from forcing 20 Democratic-led states to cooperate with immigration enforcement to receive billions of dollars in transportation grant funding.
In July, a Rhode Island-based judge ruled the Department of Transportation didn't have the authority to require the states to cooperate.
