My mom raised me as a sole parent. When I was an infant, however, she suffered with addiction and I was put in a foster care before school age. I never knew I had a dad as there was no one other than my mom on my birth certificate and I had never heard about him. When I was 10, I got a letter from my birth father from a rehab facility.

It turns out he had been an addict for the past 15 years, but had now gotten sober. It was confusing to me, but I was overall excited. I remained in foster care, though, as I had been placed in a long-term placement and I felt at home, so I did not want to leave and go live with some random person. My father lived three and a half hours away by car, which is relevant. Fast forward to now.

I am in my early 20s, and my dad has remained clean. As the years went on, I see my dad around three times a year, but he never really makes an effort to see me. However, I make an effort to contact him. He has turned his life around and gotten a high paying job, has started a new family and has three houses.
