The Great Seal was gifted to the US ambassador in 1945.
The Americans finally found it in 1952.
That means for seven years, the Soviets were listening in on the ambassador's conversations.
And like Matt said, the British, the Americans, they had never seen technology like this before.
So who was the person behind this ingenious device?
Well, Mark, have you heard of a theremin?
It's the one that sounds like all of the old sci-fi movies, right?
You know the sound I'm talking about.
It sounds like a UFO on a tiny piece of fishing wire is about to land, and that's, in my mind, what you think of when you hear a theremin.
That's exactly right.
So if you haven't seen someone play theremin before, it's a thing to behold.
Even though it is a musical instrument, it's played without being touched.
It's essentially like a proximity detector.
With one hand, you can vary the pitch, and with the other hand, you're controlling the volume, making it softer or louder.
And so when you master this ambidextrous dance, it sounds like this.
So as far as anybody in the US was concerned, including his wife, was he just, did they presume he was dead?
Like, what did they think?
This is actually quite a saga, isn't it?
