That morning, Marin's uncle asked us where we went the day before.
Marin tried to keep it casual, but she didn't lie.
She said we hiked, we saw tracks, we heard things.
Her uncle's face stayed steady, but his jaw tightened.

Marin said, no.
He looked at the rest of us.
I said no.
Jonah said no.
Lila nodded.
Her uncle walked out of the kitchen without another word.
