And I just got talking to Carl and I met some of the artists and I just thought, wow, these people are amazing.
They're not like anyone I've met in my quite sheltered academic life so far.
And they're exciting.
And this is something amazing.
And I started to read all the art magazines like Flash Art, Art Forum.
And I'd grown up with The Face and Blitz and ID and loved magazines actually.
I'd been involved in a magazine at college.
Magazines were really like the thing then.
And I thought the art magazines were really boring and really badly written, badly designed.
And crucially, they weren't talking about younger artists.
There was a big magazine at the time, Artscribe, which had been going about 15 years.
And that was kind of the British international magazine.
And actually Adrian Searle, who we love, had written a piece about the Goldsmiths group, including Damien.
And his last word was, let's hope they get away with it.
And I remember Damien being furious.
Like, this is not some sort of game we're playing and trying to pull a wool over people's eyes.
We're trying to make...
proper art and take it seriously I mean Adrian was subsequently very supportive of that whole generation but I remember that moment it's like I can't believe he wrote that and so we just began to think well maybe there should be a magazine that is all of these things that's not boringly written badly designed and about the interesting art that we saw around and
