I mean, that was the primary killer of the Native Americans when the Europeans got here was disease. So if you don't have that, you probably don't have nearly as much expansion, at least not so quickly. The Norse also were a lot more coastal. They never really settled all that far inland. So what do you have? Do you have a Norse empire that expands because it is technologically superior?

They're never going to be numerically superior because there's just no way of doing that. But... if they had gotten over here, what happens when you have... Let's say that the settlement in Newfoundland survives, and it thrives even, and it gets to a point where there's several thousand of them. As technology develops in Europe, that settlement is going to have a very easy time.

Of getting more and more. Powerful. As compared to the natives surrounding it. Or. Does it become essentially a trade hub. Where the natives are providing. Furs and. New world resources. That aren't as plentiful over there. If they had gotten far enough into the Great Lakes. They would have found massive copper deposits.

I almost wonder because when you look at the Norse way of doing things, they typically intermingled with the local population. They had no sense of racial purity. They would marry English women. They would marry Irish women. They would marry Welsh women, French women. To them, it was a cultural thing. Are you culturally Norse? And that was all that really mattered to them.

And then once they adopted Christianity, it was even less of an issue. It was, are you Christian? Okay, cool. You can be part of us. So I wonder if the Vinland settlement had grown, if it had become a large, bustling, thriving European city in the new world... What would have happened several hundred years down the line? Would there have been a more concerted colonization effort from the Norse?

Would we have a large Norse country in Canada? And would it have clashed with the other European powers later on? Or would they have just had the leg up to begin with? I think they probably would have intermingled. There probably would have been a lot of intermarriages. And once they found iron deposits, it would have been over.

Like I that's part of what drives me up a wall when you look at the situation is they were that close to the entire course of modern history changing. And they just left.

Uh, Greenland, there were some Inuit they encountered, but... That was it. Yeah, Iceland, there were a few Irish priests, and that was about it. Monks.

Yeah. And they slaughtered them. Sure. Without trouble.
