This happens in 1000 AD, and apparently nobody bothered to write anything down about it. Nobody was like, you know, let me keep a diary and make sure that makes it back to Europe. No. No, they got over there, and they set up a colony. We found it. That's the ridiculous part. Like, here's the thing that I don't think is appreciated enough.

Up until 1960, it was, like, generally accepted that they probably got here, but nobody could say for certain where. They hadn't really found much in the way of evidence. There were things that they found in Greenland that they were like, ah, well, it suggests that they had contact with North America, but not necessarily that they actually settled there.

So there were a whole bunch of different places it could be. Think about how vast the eastern seaboard of the United States and Canada are. They found it. This tiny little group of like nine buildings.

On the coast of Newfoundland. They just found it. I mean, that is what's even more wild is back in 1914, a complete amateur who was just a guy who lived in Newfoundland was like, it's here. He's using the sagas. He's like, oh yeah, it's probably right here. Now what he pointed to was actually whatever the bay directly west of Lanzo Meadows is.

And I understand why he picked it, because if you look at that bay, it starts with a P, Pistolet. Pistolet Bay. Or it might be Pistolet, I don't know. Canada, just... Stop using two different languages. For the love of God, don't keep French. Um... Anyway, he describes it. He's like, oh, it's probably pistolet bay. And if you look at it, that kind of makes sense because you...

In order to do that, you have to sail between an island and a certain cape, and then you have to go west past the cape, as he describes, as they describe in the saga, and then you turn in, and there's a big bay, and then at the very end of the bay, down to the southeast, there's a little pinch spot where at high tide, or at low tide, you might have the water go out far enough that that becomes a sandy bank, and then that would lead you down a short little river into a lake.

That was 1914. Oh, wow, okay. 1960, the Ingstads, it is Helgi and Anna Ingstad, I believe. The former is an explorer, the latter is an archaeologist, you know, a little power couple. They were exploring, looking for this colony, and they go up to Lanzo Meadows to a place known as the Old Indian Mounds or something. they start digging and they start finding Viking artifacts.

Nothing based on any actual evidence. There have been places where like, let's dig around here and see, and they don't find anything.
