I'd rest there, breathe the night air, then head back before anyone noticed I was gone.
But the curve never came.
The trail just kept going straight.
Like the woods had been stretched out like taffy, I slowed down and easy.
That's when I turned to head back and froze.
Fire was still visible, but tiny.
Farther away than it should have been, like I'd walked a mile, not a few hundred feet.

It was like something heavy pressing against me.
Not physical, but thicker.
Like walking through water.
Like the world around me was holding its breath.
I turned and ran.
No more clearing my head.
I just wanted the fire.
The faster I moved, the worse it felt.
Like the trail was stretching ahead of me, refusing to let me gain ground.
When I reached the clearing, something was wrong.
The fire was cold.
Just grey ash spread in an uneven ring like it had been out for hours.
