I kept shifting around, sweat sticking to the back.
Jordan snored through the tent wall.
Some inset buzzed around my ear.
But mostly, it was a story.
That image of something walking wrong, looking almost like someone you know, until it gets too close.
Around three or four in the morning, I gave up.
I unzipped my tent as quietly as I could and stepped out.
The air hit me hard.
Sharp and cold.
Colder than it had been the night before.
The fire had burned down to glowing embers.
It looked safe.
Small, comforting Eden.
I thought maybe a short walk would help clear my head.
Just up the trail and back.
Nothing dramatic.
At first, the path looked normal.
Rocky, with thick trees on both sides.
Moonlight sneaking through the branches.
I figured I'd walk until the trail curved to the right, where a cluster of boulders sat.
