So with just those four little equations, you can build pretty much any monster at any challenge rating, and it will be pretty close to the kind of monsters that you would see in the D&D 2024 Monster Manual, but also pretty close to the monsters that you would see in any version of 5e. This one really hasn't changed. I think I put this out originally in the Lazy DM's workbook many years ago.

And it really, the only change that I'm adding here is the old one had three plus one half challenge rating for attack bonus. And I have upped that to four. So I added one bonus because A, that fits Paul's better. But also I think that given how characters got a little bit more powerful, giving a slightly higher edge on attack bonus.

What this doesn't do very well is it doesn't really help you build monsters below challenge rating one. So it doesn't really help you build monsters below challenge rating one. And for that, you really need a table because CR one eights and one quarters and one halves. Mostly they're just like their armor class should be pretty low. Their attack bonus should be like plus three or plus four.

They should do like three or four points of damage and their hit points should be low because they fall over dead quickly. So. That, you know, it's harder to come up with an equation that works well below CR1. But from CR1 to CR30, I think this equation works just fine. I think Paul's equation works fine too. Paul's actually does help you build monsters from CR0 all the way to 30.
