Jerry Brown said he's going to run for president of the United States. My very close friend in politics, Leo McCarthy, was the Speaker of the House at the time, chair of Jerry Brown's presidential campaign. I said to Leo, tell the governor if he wants to run for president, he cannot wait untilβ the California primary, which is in June, very late in the process.

Because by then, somebody will be the nominee for the party. They will then take control of the California Democratic Party because they will be able to choose who are the delegates to the convention, all of that. That's how it worked in those days. So there was aβthis may be more than you ever want to know, but as I say to people, be ready. You never know.
