And the research has really shown that
using letters to do that.
So we're teaching the sound symbol correspondences at the same time we're working on the sounds, we're working on the symbols, and we're connecting those sounds, but connecting the idea that a letter or a group of letters represents a sound.
It's difficult for them to do that.
talking about a group of letters, what is SRCD?
Specific Reading Comprehension Disorder.
And that is a term that has been given to children who have difficulty with comprehension, understanding the text.
And so some of those children, many of them may, I can't remember the exact statistic, but
They may decode, they may understand those sound-symbol connections and learn them easily, but they're having trouble understanding what the text is saying.
Yes.
So understanding the meaning of word, the word, understanding how the word is used in a sentence, understanding how it fits into the story.
So with those children, we work a lot with vocabulary, building background knowledge.
So going to bat in New Zealand,
You're cricket.
I'm thinking you go to bat.
We don't have cricket in Canada.
So for a Canadian child going to bat, they wouldn't think of cricket.
Whereas in New Zealand, you have that background knowledge.
So you bring in their background.
You try to run with what they know for their background knowledge and then build it.
