If you're a top club and you're paying our top wages and the player is still of a decent age, there's actually not that many clubs you can sell to.

This is one of the oddities, really, of where football's ended up.

And there's not also going to be that many clubs that necessarily the player, if you were feeling you might want to move one on,

might even want to go to.

And if other teams feel pretty stocked in those areas, then your pool narrows and narrows.

So I'm quite struck by the Barclay-Liverpool link in that while I think Liverpool will have to pay a fair amount of money for him, by virtue of the fact that Liverpool can give him the sort of contract that he wants, which a lot of other sides would find difficult, and can give him Champions League football and play him for a club like Liverpool, which he'd want,

Liverpool might not end up weirdly paying Paris Saint-Germain as much for Barclay with his pedigree as they might end up paying Leipzig for Diamandi without his.

And Diamandi would probably come in on less money if he was to do both of them.

The trade-offs of this stuff, it's not straightforward.

My thing with both Di Maria and Barclay, I think they've got a common jaw, is I still think, I take Barclay the idea of Barclay being oven ready to an extent, but let's be clear, he is and has been quite well protected, because that's what Louis-Henriquet's chosen to do with his players, and he's able to do given the way Ligue 1 is.
