Edward Holly was back in court for the early stages of a criminal case that dates back 20 years.

The now 42-year-old is charged with killing his ex-girlfriend Megan McDonald in March 2003.

Holly was arrested two weeks ago, providing what state police called closure in a cold case.

I'm definitely not guilty.

I love Megan with all my heart.

With the victim's family present, investigators say Holly killed McDonald, the daughter of a retired NYPD detective, because he was angry she was dating someone else and because he owed her money.

But the arrest created a rift between police and the Orange County District Attorney, who says his office wasn't consulted.

A judge freed Holly when the DA failed to secure an indictment within six days as required by law.

Holly's attorney calls the 17-page complaint a reach.
