Cartel murder accused Sean McGovern will face two separate trials for the charges that have been levelled against him since his extradition from the United Arab Emirates.
McGovern stands accused of five different offences, including the murder of Noel Duck Egg Kerwin and directing an attempt to kill James Mago Gately.
Today I'm talking with Eimear Rabbit about an appearance from Portlaoise at Dublin's special criminal court.
You're listening to Crime World, a podcast from crimeworld.com.
So there was a mention of Sean McGovern's cases before the special criminal court this week.
Look, his case has essentially been adjourned.
Now, there was two things that were mentioned by his own lawyers.
They asked if they could adjourn it again to see if a date was
will be required.
Now, that seems like an unusual statement.
I imagine it's a legalese.
Sean McGovern is charged with five offences.
He was returned from the United Arab Emirates and he is in custody awaiting trials, essentially.
But more interesting, I think, was a little statement that came from the prosecution
the prosecution counsel Dominic McGinn senior counsel told the court that McGovern was subject of two separate Garda investigations and ultimately there would be two separate trials required and it's the first we've heard of that and
There is a huge amount of documentation and a lot of evidence in this file that his defence are looking at Sean Geeran, Senior Counsel, is representing McGovern.
And there has been sort of delays because there's so much to read.
Basically.
But of course, that's because there's been two different Garda investigations and while five charges are lumped together, they're both very significant.
