And so I ended up writing an opinion piece where I compared
their strategies of firstly deny it, lie, cover up, threaten to the strategies used by the offender himself, Douglas Steele, following the assault, which were very similar.
And those sort of strategies used by offenders like to deny, minimise, reframe responsibility, et cetera.
And I ended up concluding that the university has a mentality of a rapist.
And in my opinion, peace.
Now, if they were already pissed off, they were definitely doubled down.
So because of doubling down, other media then piled in as well.
I'm in shock.
Like, I'm actually in shock hearing that story.
So that ended up resulting in a million dollar review of James Cook University and a million dollar inquiry into James Cook University and the entire culture of James Cook University.
So not just that one incident, but the whole culture.
So that was, you know, and for me, again, like I reflect back on my career about like, what were the learning moments?
That was another learning moment of in that moment,
Of course, I was nervous about doubling down.
I remember being in my house and actually like shaking at one point.
I can imagine.
But it was 100% the right decision.
And I'm really glad that I had that editorial support to double down in that moment because it produced an outcome that then led to an inquiry.
And the thing that was interesting about when I did the Red Zone report was I knew that there was going to be backlash and I knew it was going to come not just from the colleges, but also that some of the students were
But I also knew that there would be students living in the colleges who were suffering, who would feel seen and heard and supported because of the report and the media reporting.
