The Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has a long history of targeting his critics. Now his main political rival has been arrested. The mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem Imamoglu, was detained as part of an anti-corruption investigation. On Tuesday, Istanbul University said it had annulled his degree, meaning Mr Imamoglu won't be able to be the opposition's presidential candidate as planned.
