I'm a fairly limited singer, so I often write songs that I imagine someone singing it better.

I often write songs from a woman's point of view, so I will always try and get a woman to do it.

I know, but, you know, Rene, I don't know if you've ever come across Rene Gay, a very feisty character, but no longer with us.

But, yeah, sometimes I would, you know, she got into the routine of at least a dozen of my songs over the years.

Oh, wow.

And I wrote one song for her called You Broke a Beautiful Thing and I sent it to her and she, you know, a sort of country soul song, like a Solomon Burke song or something.

Yeah.

And she said, no, I don't like that.

You know, I don't sing country.

And I said, you know, just try it.

You know, it's not country, Renee.

It's country soul.

And, you know, she tried it.

She always would try it.

And then she just totally kicked it out of the park.

No, just to see if anything comes up.
