because it's doing the thing it thinks it's supposed to do really well, really fast, with great power, but it's not what we wanted.
It's not the outcome we were looking for.
So you mentioned I published that book in 2020, and when I published it, I expected it to sit on the bookshelves under dystopian fiction, and now it seems to be appearing under current affairs.
So it has taken that rather sharp turn to the left.
And the three laws of robotics scare me a lot because Asimov wrote those, and then he immediately wrote a whole bunch of stories of them going wrong.
And what we're doing now in the AI space is we're going, oh, three laws, that must have been a really good idea, and have forgotten about the fact he then just tore it to shreds immediately afterwards.
But, oh, no, it must be good.
It's a difficult one there because the technology is moving way, way faster than the regulators can keep up.
And we have this inherent assumption that it will be good.
It is being used for good.
There will be good value that comes out of it.
And that risk is worth taking.
because the intent is good.
But if you look back at some of the early use of AI in the US for profiling insurance and health insurance and those kinds of things, where the unconscious bias of the training data set wasn't even known or understood, and it wasn't until it was well into production and well being used, and years into use, that people actually understood that there was even that unconscious bias there that was causing the problem and the issue.
So the technology is always going to be racing further ahead.
And the social media ban for under 16 year olds in Australia is, I'm going to call it bipolar because some people go, yes, this is a fantastic initiative.
It's great.
It's going to protect our children, dot, dot, dot, dot, dot.
And the other side of the say, it takes a kid about 20 minutes to circumvent it with a VPN.
So from that perspective, it's not worth doing because it can be circumvented so quickly and so easily.
