And on the 26th of June, a particular gang known as the Greek, they came to be known as the Green Mount Gang, but they targeted Veronica brutally.
In the year before, she had been highlighting that other murders were taking place, that there were various people who had been murdered.
Fran Preston and David Weaver, Gerry Connolly, Eric Shorthall, Eddie McCabe.
There was a woman, Catherine Brennan, an innocent mother of two, was shot dead in Talla.
So Veronica was she was flagging the fact that.
gun murders were happening, crime seemed to be escalating, or certainly the criminals were becoming even more violent.
And then the following year, in June 1996, she herself was targeted.
And the reaction and the fallout from that was extraordinary.
It was, and it came in the same month that Detective Garda, Gerry McCabe, was murdered in Adair in County Limerick as well by the Provisional IRA.
So in that summer, there was a real feeling of a real threat to the state, a threat to democracy, a Garda and a journalist both separately in different circumstances, both having been murdered.
And the reaction came swift in terms of legislation and
And this is part of the legacy of Veronica Guerin's work and the fallout from her murder.
The Criminal Assets Bureau was settled.
They did.
And CAB was established by October 1996.
So what, three months after Veronica was murdered, CAB was up and running.
And there were teething problems as it figured out and navigated its way through the legal world as well.
But you had GardaΓ, you had members of the Revenue Commissioners, you had from the Department of Social Welfare at that time, all the experts, forensic accountants, all looking at the wealth that there was and that certain monies in bank accounts and
All this cash and a lot of it was cash.
And the gang that actually was responsible for and from within which people came who murdered Veronica Guerin in a two year period, they had taken in and this is pounds.
