What's really frustrating is there was a wonderful account of this written by an East Roman ambassador, a man called Olympiodorus, who knew everything, wrote everything down, but it only survives in fragments. Damn. Yes. So there are hints.

And the trouble is that Zosimus certainly at least confused a few things as well. So this makes it quite tricky to know exactly what happens. But the broad outline would seem to be that in response to the Rhine invasion and of the Vandals, Alans and Suevs.
