It seemed that the mix of drugs and alcohol that she was using as well as a possible underlying personality disorder made this an impossible feat for Joanna's parents.

Joanna and her parents found themselves going into this vicious cycle of them trying to punish or discipline Joanna to her telling them, F you, you can't tell me what to do.

She started having very intense emotional outbursts.

And if Kevin or Kathleen tried to physically restrain her,

or even give her a gentle touch to comfort her, she would strike them.

Then the once studious schoolgirl who got good grades became very disruptive in her classes and started getting in trouble with her teachers.

There was one time where she showed up to school drunk, carrying an empty bottle of whiskey with her, which she ended up throwing through a classroom window and shattering the glass of the window, and then she climbed through the window to get out of the building.

After that, she started skipping school altogether.

She started stealing money from her parents to buy alcohol and drugs.

And again, she was seeing and dating much older men and women.

And at that point, Joanna was absolutely out of control.

Nobody knew what to do with her.

By the summer of 1997, 15-year-old Joanna met a 21-year-old man named John Trenner.

John was living at home with his mother about three miles away from where Joanna lived with her parents.

John had been out walking his dog that day when Joanna ran up and started petting his dog, introducing herself, saying that she loved dogs.

The two agreed to meet up the following day, and from there, the two started a relationship.

At that time, John quickly learned that Joanna was a troubled teen who didn't get along with her parents.

Not long after they met, Joanna told John that her parents kicked her out of their home and asked to live with him.

but John was living with his mother at that point and he knew that Joanna was freshly 16 at that point and so did his mother, so she didn't approve of the whole situation.

Now, as you can imagine, it has been disputed that Joanna was kicked out of her family home.
