When he was only three years old, Will's father, Lyle Lanway, held him, his mother, and a babysitter hostage at gunpoint for several hours after a dispute between Lyle and Will's mother over her going on a shopping trip.

Police were eventually called, but when they arrived, it took over five hours to talk Lyle down before he ultimately released his hostages.
