I did my first radio check-in at 0800 on the 15th with district dispatch.
Went through my routine.
Calibrated the fire finder.
Swept the tower.
Cleaned the glass.
Settled in.
The first six weeks were good.
Dry start to the season, so I was on smokes a lot.
I called in seven fires in that stretch.
Four were lightning.
Three were hikers who didn't put their fires out right.
Routine work.
I was happy.
On the 3rd of August, a Wednesday, beginning of week 7, a man hiked up to the tower.
It was about 2 in the afternoon.
I was eating lunch at the Fire Finder.
I saw him coming up the last stretch of the ridge from the south, which is the direction people come from when they're coming from the trailhead 22 miles south.
He was walking at a steady pace.
