Try and work out the issue of suffering.

You look at the great religions, Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, and all the other isms like the cults, etc.,
If you begin looking closely at them, all of them are works, righteousness, religions.
They say you have to do something, and this includes Catholicism, you have to do something to merit eternal life.
Face maker, fast, pray.
Do good works.
Do religious works.
Repentance.
All these things are things you have to do.
Now, what changes the dynamic is when you see God as the judge.
And you'll never see him as a judge when you strip him of his law.
When we forsake the law of God, those commandments, then God isn't a judge.
He's just a man in the sky.
