The California Board of Parole decided to release Funston under the state's elderly parole program, where inmates are eligible for a parole hearing if they're older than 50 and been incarcerated for at least 20 years.

The commissioners found he no longer posed a threat to the community because of his good behavior in prison, his work in therapy and his plan to avoid repeating his crimes.
