He's got money.

But I think he starts to question what really matters in life, and it turns him back towards the spirituality of his childhood.

That's right.

It's very difficult to trace, but you find little evidences, like he's alone in New York and goes to church every Sunday.

In his memoirs of cruising the Pacific as a sailor and as a mate, he talks at length about his encounters with the missionaries and noticing that the missionaries really made a dramatic improvement in the lives of the people in the South Pacific.

And he contrasts that with the merchants.

who would denigrate the missionaries and go, they're destroying the people's culture and all this sort of stuff.

But he said the merchants were the really corrupt ones.

They were destroying people's lives.

They were making them alcoholic.

They were ripping them off financially.

So you have this sense that while he doesn't talk much about religion or faith, he does have these religious moral standards that he's always held to.

Yes.

I don't think so.

He's not a man who exposes his inner thinking very much.

But from the way in which he lived his life, his worldview encompassed tragedy without necessarily challenging his belief in God.

What's he working towards at this point?

He begins to think about becoming an Anglican clergyman.
