He's inherited a cow when he buys the farm that is probably the worst milking cow you could imagine, everything you don't want in a milker.

And he eventually sells it.

And several months later, he comes back from the market leading its replacement.

And his son looks at him in horror and says, Dad, you've bought Annie again.

And he goes, no, no, no, I'm not that stupid.

It's Annie.

He lets go of the halter and Annie walks straight to her old milking bale.

He bought the same.

The same disastrous cow.

Again, his kids are guessing it destroyed him.

They look at the 25 years afterwards where he didn't seem to take any initiative and they go, ah, it destroyed his soul.

I'm finding evidence that he's still got ambition bubbling away in the background.

But I think at this point he recognises that with a growing family of kids,

He needs to stop being the adventurer and start being the responsible adult.

He was going broke.

His wife was saying to him, we can't continue, and he recognised that.

So he humbly went back to the Archbishop and said, can I have a job?

So he's given a small rural parish, which was basically he was asked to start at the bottom again.

He'd blown his credit with the church.

Why?
