Well, the four years being a farmer when he was so well-known and could have been such an asset to the church.
And I guess, you know, just because you come crawling back to the archbishop doesn't mean there's a plum vacancy somewhere in Melbourne for you.
Massive.

So, you know, he's still trying things, but he's actually devoting his energies to raising his children in a very happy home and making sure they get the best education they can.
Diminished?
Certainly diminished in the eyes of his children.
But I think his self-esteem was still robust.
He saw himself as doing something that was of value, not making himself big and famous, but making sure his kids got a good grounding in life.
And he has these little attempts to try to do something for himself.
For instance, he tries becoming an author.
I think it's another get-rich-quick scheme to get out of his financial problems.
He becomes a teacher at Geelong Grammar, and he's an outstanding teacher.
He gets a teaching qualification.
And he's extremely popular with the boys who, some of them mentioned to his sons that they never had a better teacher.
But these careers don't blossom and he continues in the clergy.
