My only rule in novels is when I, my favourite thing about writing novels is bringing new characters in.
It's like, I'm not interested in ciphers or anything like that.
They're never there to move the plot along.
They're like, oh, who would be funny to move in?
And I always, always go, could you write a novel about this character?
Even if they've got four lines, you think, I think there's in one of the books, I say, if you followed these two people home, what would that story be?
And I always think that.
What would the story be?
What would the novel be with these characters in it?
And that, I always think, is a good writing tip as well.
