But we were having people with a different letter behind their name, whether it's Republican or independent or anything else, do it. I'm here for solving problems. And I think as long as we have a system that allows elected officials and candidates to sort of say, well, I don't have to solve your problems as long as I can convince you that so-and-so over here is worse than me.

I don't think we're solving a lot of problems because there's no incentive to do it. So I think the answer, to be more specific, if you want the more specific answer, right now in the state of Iowa, independent voters are not allowed to participate in primaries that their tax dollars pay for. I think that's wrong. So I think we should have a single open primary.

So I was registered as an independent when I first registered to vote. I did register as a Democrat soon after that because I realized in order to vote in the primary, I had to pick my poison. The difference is I still talk about the fact that it was poison that I picked.

I'm a public servant. I live in a system where in order to be effective, just like when I was a voter in my early 20s, I have to choose one or the other. And so that's what I've done. If I win, is it a victory for the Democratic Party? That would be for other Democrats to decide. I've never been to the DNC. I'm clear about what I believe.
