Thank you again for listening.
You are now living in a liberal majority Canada.
Yes, Mark Carney's done it through a combination of four crossers and by-elections, this prime minister said.
now has a majority government to help break it all down, explain what it could mean for Canadian politics and policy.
I have Andrew Coyne, Global Mail columnist and Munk Debate contributor here in studio.
Thanks, Andrew, for coming in today.
Good to be with you.
So what should we expect of this, Andrew?
How significant?
Do you rate this moment, going back to an election, a surprise result in a sense out of last year's election, to now a minority translates into a majority with rumors that there could be more floor crossers on their way and what is a razor-thin majority now could potentially expand into something healthier and more stable in the months to come?
And Quebec is often a master of sniffing which way the winds are blowing and make sure they're on the right side of the majority government.
Are we seeing though, Andrew, is this all just part and parcel of your book, Crisis of Canadian Democracy, the hollowing out of political parties?
I think of Macron's victory in France and the extent to which he basically created a political party, destroyed the mainline parties.
And he's still prime minister, how many ever years this is later.
Is Mark Carney, in a sense, just part of the same phenomenon?
Maybe we're not seeing it in the same crystallized way that it happened in France and other democracies.
You could look to our fellow democracy to the south.
they have a lot of problems going on right now with a strong leader complex, the failure of institutions.
I'm not saying Canada's anywhere near as bad, but as part of what's benefiting Mark Carney, this kind of gravitational force that's been set up around party leaders and the immense powers they have, especially in the Canadian system where they're both the parliamentary leader in the House, but also the executive leader of the government.
The pre, you're referring to the Mexican party that's famous for its longevity.
