They're not strict feat chains.

an initial feat then there's a bunch of feats in the middle which you can pick and choose from which give you different features and then finally you get a proper ascension feat at the end so in theory you could just have what level's the end 12-ish I think 12 okay yeah so you take the first one at 4 or so and then the last one at 12 I was just checking it wasn't 20 or something because I don't know how many campaigns get there but 12 is and then you wouldn't be at Death Blank for long would you you don't want that no

So you progressively, through a little feet chain, you gradually become a death knight or you gradually become a lich.

And who would not want to do that?
