He stared at the table in front of him as the magistrate judge read the charges and Cole answered yes when asked if he understood.
Prosecutors said Cole spoke with law enforcement for more than four hours Thursday following his arrest.
They did not provide details in court on what he said, but a person familiar with the matter told NPR that Cole told investigators he believed conspiracy theories that the 2020 election was stolen.
Cole is due back in court later this month for a detention hearing.
