At his initial court appearance, Cole was dressed in a beige jumpsuit and glasses.
He stared at the table in front of him as the magistrate judge read the charges against him, and Cole answered yes when asked if he understood.
Prosecutors said Cole had spoken with law enforcement for more than four hours Thursday following his arrest, but they didn't provide any details in court on what he said.
The judge set a detention hearing for later this month.

The suspect in custody is 30-year-old Brian Cole Jr.
He was arrested in Woodbridge, Virginia, south of Washington, D.C.
The FBI made the arrest after a nearly five-year investigation that had seemed to have gone cold.
Top Justice Department officials, including FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino, touted the arrest at a news conference Thursday.
Officials say a new team at the FBI took a fresh look at all the evidence collected in the case and generated new leads that ultimately led to Cole's arrest.
Cole is expected to appear in federal court in D.C., just down the street from the U.S.
