So we're talking about legal royalty in South Carolina.
So Alex Murdoch's great-grandfather, grandfather, and father were all the chief prosecutors of their region.
So Murdoch has been the chief prosecutor for over 80 years.
And it carries enormous weight in the county that they're in, Hampton County, but across the state of South Carolina.
Alex himself didn't quite reach the heights of being the top prosecutor.
He became a personal injury lawyer.
Yeah, breaking that generate.
Well, let's keep talking about that.
But this is a very well-connected, well-liked, prominent community member, big donor to political parties, had these kind of famous balls at his home, big sprawling property in South Carolina.
But behind all of that, he had developed a severe opioid addiction and he'd also been systematically stealing millions of dollars from his own clients, which were some of the most vulnerable people in the area in his practice of family law for many, many years.
So on the evening of the 7th of June 2021, Alex Murdoch called the police to say he had found the bodies of his wife.
Her name was Maggie and she was 52 and his 22-year-old son, Paul, at the family's hunting property out in the regions.
Both had been shot multiple times at close range and there were no signs of a break-in or a robbery.
Now, Alex told the police at the time that he had been napping at the main house.
He had then driven to visit his sick mother and when he returned to the property, that's when he found their bodies.
As you can understand, investigators were sceptical from early on and as they dug deeper, they found this whole conspiracy of stealing money, as I've just mentioned, through his business and also discovered the opioid addiction.
And one of the interesting things that really got them thinking was that he had stolen a lot of money from their housekeeper who had died at an accident on the property in 2018.
