It was expected, but it's also something I put on myself.
I decided I was going to discipline that child.
Well, even you said when you were telling that story, I noticed you used the language, I had a few naughty boys.
As if you were running that classroom.
Anyway.
That's the psychology of it.
Anyway, back to Hubbard.
Hubbard's giving us no shortage of information.
According to official records, his last seven months of Navy service were plagued with stomach ulcers and conjunctivitis.
Lovely.
Just lovely.
I don't know.
I wonder if they were.
Shortly after, Hubbard was discharged from Navy service and returned to California.
By now, it's the mid-1940s.
He's 35 years old.
He has disappointed himself once again by failing to form a career in the Navy, and many records call this the beginning of Hubbard's mental decline, essentially.
At the same time, a lifelong inspiration and mentor figure of Ron's, a man named Alistair Crowley, was ill and nearing the end of his life.
And in this sort of like midlife crisis stage, Ron abandons any plans to return home to his family in Washington and instead makes a new, bold life choice that sets him on the path to the creation of Scientology.
He will stay in California and will live off a disability pension from the Navy, dedicating his time to the occult religious studies that Crowley had commenced.
