And so in, I think, April 2017, my story in Good Weekend was finally published about my farmer.

My faux farmer.

And three days before publication, I called Kirsty because I decided she couldn't possibly read the article without having had some warning that it was coming.

What a conversation that must have been.

I've never made such a difficult phone call in all my life.

How did she respond?

Disbelieving at first.

She now tells me that she thought I was some crazy stalker or troll.

She didn't believe me and she kept on saying but, but.

But she hadn't seen his house either.

And so gradually through, we ended up I think speaking for three and a half hours that day.

I didn't want to give him worst nightmares.

I just needed to understand what had happened.

When you met with Kirsty, what pieces of the jigsaw could you put together for one another?

Well, we did a lot of calendar cross-checking and looking at dates and the times that he'd cancelled on her, he was with me.

She's very funny.

She's a wonderful woman.

She joked to me one day that she thought he must have had a whiteboard with two columns on it and different coloured marker pens perhaps.

And so I've got this picture of him now at his whiteboard with two columns and one for me and one for her and what stories he'd told me and what stories he'd told her.

And interestingly, he'd never, ever mentioned his architectural background to her.
