That was so hard.

Is life still going on for you?

Oh, it was awful.

It was a feeling of jealousy and anger and that mix of emotions of green-eyed rage.

And I'd started to see who he really was, that he wasn't at all the man I'd thought he was.

But human emotions are not logical creatures, are they?

When did you finally contact her?

I spent most of 2016 in a state of recovery.

And I think by the middle of the year, I was pretty good.

I went to India on a trip.

I didn't do anything sort of new agey, but maybe the effects were subliminal.

But... And...

I had my 50th birthday, which was glorious, and friends from all over the country came to my place for a party.

And then in early 2017, Amelia Lester started as editor of Good Weekend, and she'd come from The New Yorker, and we went for lunch and talked about story ideas, which is my favourite thing to do.

I just love telling great, great, interesting human stories in my journalism.

And we had lunch and we talked about this and that and other stories.

And we were walking back to the office and I said, there is another story that I could write.

She said, oh, yes, please tell me.

And I burst into tears as I started to tell it.

And she said, I don't think you're ready quite yet, but when you are, I want to publish that story.
