There was a letter given to the judge that we weren't allowed to see.
There was no letter for us.
As far as I'm concerned, there was no genuine remorse from him at all.
If anything, the complete opposite.
He was...
The day we gave our victim impact statements, he was winking at someone in the gallery in court.
The following day at sentencing, the same thing, he was smirking and winked at someone.
with the guards telling them like so I mean that to me doesn't show remorse in any kind of capacity whatsoever no absolutely not it's a tactical response yeah a strategic move in order to get a lighter sentence in my view
Yeah, he had 23 prior convictions at the time.
He was out on bail at the time of the attack on Martin as well.
I guess a sense of disbelief is that all a person's life is worth.
And then only afterwards we realize about the 25% remission piece as well.
We're just not familiar with this process at all.
We've been thrown into it.
So as far as I know, it's if he, basically, if he has good behavior, he will have 25% of a sentence reduced.
So a six-year sentence essentially is a four and a half year potential release.
That was all, you know, all of this was new to us.
I knew about suspended sentences, but I didn't know about...
kind of automatic remission nearly.
So it's an extremely light sentence from our perspective when you consider the gravity of the case, the vulnerability of Martin at the time.
