Yes, the defensive lapses are way more glaring for him than anyone else because the goaltending situation is so precarious in Edmonton.
But the one thing that holds me back in general with his game to be a Norris winner is that
when he makes a mistake, you know, you'll see him get trapped in his own zone.
It's those puck retrievals, right?
There's sometimes there's just a little bit too much risk for me in that.
And you see him get hemmed in his own end when he makes a mistake in those sequences versus say a Maureen Sider,
who I think brings the defensive acumen you should have for this award.
I think if you're going all around, you have to check a couple boxes, right?
It's not the same as say the Selkie where it's like, you must kill X number of penalties.
You must do all of this.
It's like, you should be doing a little bit of everything.
So you should be retrieving pucks with a little less risk.
You should be moving the puck
up the ice and in transition.
I don't think Evan Bouchard does that as well as some of the other guys in the conversation this year either.
You should be doing a little of everything, killing penalties, going up against top competition, contributing offensively, and playing some shutdown defense.
So that's my line of thinking with him.
I think that the top three guys are definitely top five caliber, but I do think Sider's missing from that.
Well, the Carlson year is a funny one because I think that year and also the year Roman Yossi was popping off on the score sheet.
Those were years I actually got to vote too.
