If your life is too fixed, if you're too far on the exploit side of the spectrum, I do believe you benefit from exposing yourself to more uncertain situations.
But more than anything, what it does is it prepares you for the inevitable uncertainty that you're going to face.
So there's one study of uncertainty over time, and it's been going on since the 80s.
It's found that the five highest points of uncertainty in the world have all occurred in the last five years.
Wait, is that real?
Based on the metrics that they use.
So they track dimensions of uncertainty in newspapers, et cetera.
The Bubonic Plan.
World War II.
Since the study began in the 80s.
COVID, war in Iran, tariff policy, war in Ukraine, et cetera.
We're seeing all these global spikes of uncertainty in people's perception at a time when their tolerance for uncertainty is at an all-time low.
And so what it does, exposing yourself to uncertainty, is it prepares you for future uncertain moments that you might be exposed to.

I'm glad we clarified that because I was just thinking, surely part of it- If you lived in Florence during the Rubonic Plague, you're like, oh, I'm sorry about your little overseas geopolitical fight right now.
