Thanking special forces troops who were involved in capturing NicolΓ‘s Maduro in Venezuela was the official reason for Trump's visit to North Carolina.
But in the middle of his remarks, Trump called up his favored candidate in the state's U.S.
And then Michael Whatley, the former Republican Party chairman, delivered a quick pitch for his campaign.
This is a break with the norm of avoiding overt political messaging in front of troops in uniform.
But far from the first time Trump has done it.
Democrats say they need significant changes to the tactics being used by immigration agents, like removing masks and requiring judicial warrants.
And they want those changes cemented in law.
President Trump was asked about negotiations while preparing to board Marine One.
He said he has to protect law enforcement.
