Well, we're talking about hotspots, you know.

It's a hotspot in a lot of ways, especially geopolitically.

It's just right in the thick.

So despite being the underdog, they, the British, were able to hold off the German Empire army throughout this day.

Now it's reported, again, estimates that the German army suffered anywhere from 2,000 to 2,500 casualties, while the British suffered approximately 1,600.

The original count of army men is kind of unclear, but all that is to say is the British, despite the overwhelming odds, actually came out on top.

So one might consider this to be a technical win for the British, having held off a larger army.

but also a strategical win for Germany, because eventually they kind of pushed in on the front and gained territory.

So you can kind of see it both ways, depending on your lens.

Now, because of this, right, the Germans losing more than the British, the day goes on and the Germans continue to deploy more troops into the fight because they have, I guess, the headcount essentially.

But when it became clear that their odds were turning,

Now talking about the British.

General Sir John French ordered his men to retreat.

And even as they were retreating, there is documentation, he has written about this himself, the men continued to fight hard.

In later memoirs, actually, General French notes that the men seemed to embody what he called a superhuman endurance.

And this is where my ridiculous comparison was going to come in.
